でPlace of action / means / β€œby”

で marks where an ACTION happens. If you do something (eat, study, work, play), the location is marked by で. で is also used for MEANS/INSTRUMENT: でんしゃで (by train), はしで (with chopsticks), にほんごで (in Japanese). Quick rule: で = where/how you DO the action.

Key points
Quick reminders for how to use it.
  • Use で for the location where you do an action.
  • Use で for means/transport/instrument (by/with).
  • に vs で: に often marks existence/destination; で marks action location.
