What is KanaPlay?
KanaPlay is a small web app to practice Japanese kana, basic vocabulary, and JLPT-style questions using short, focused sessions.
Do I need an account or login?
No account is required. All study settings and progress are stored locally in your browser on each device.
Is KanaPlay free to use?
Yes. KanaPlay is currently completely free to use and does not show ads or trackers inside the app.
Which devices and browsers are supported?
Any modern browser on desktop, tablet, or mobile should work. For the best experience, use the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
What can I practice on the Kana page?
The Kana section focuses on hiragana and katakana. You can switch between Learn, Flashcards, Quiz, and Typing to drill recognition and recall.
What is the Kotoba Quiz?
Kotoba Quiz helps you learn beginner-friendly vocabulary using meanings or listening. It supports an SM-2 based spaced repetition mode for more serious practice.
What is the JLPT Test mode?
JLPT Test simulates JLPT-style multiple choice questions. You pick a level and answer timed sets that cover vocabulary, grammar, and reading.
Why is there a PokƩmon page?
The PokƩdex section is a fun side-mode where you guess PokƩmon names in Japanese. It is meant to be light, playful practice for reading and recognition.
Where is my progress stored?
Progress, preferences, and streaks are stored using your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is sent to a server-side account.
Will clearing browser data reset my progress?
Yes. If you clear site data, cookies, or local storage for KanaPlay, your local progress will be reset on that device.
Can I sync between devices?
Automatic sync is not supported. For SM-2 based Kotoba sessions you can use Export and Import inside the quiz to manually move data between browsers.
Does KanaPlay collect analytics?
The app is designed to be lightweight and focused on learning. If analytics are used, they are minimal and not tied to user accounts.
How do I switch between light and dark mode?
Use the sun/moon icon in the top navigation bar or the dock at the bottom. Your choice is remembered per device.
How do I change the interface language?
Use the language button in the navigation bar (EN/ID). The app currently supports English and Bahasa Indonesia.
Can I adjust sound or turn audio off?
Yes. The main Kana trainer has sound and speed controls, and the Kotoba section includes an audio speed slider. You can disable sound entirely from the study controls.
Which voice is used for pronunciation?
KanaPlay uses your browser's built-in Speech Synthesis voices for Japanese. The exact voice will depend on your operating system and browser.
I don't hear any audio. What can I try?
First, make sure sound is enabled inside the app and your device volume is up. Some browsers or devices may not support Speech Synthesis for Japanese; trying another browser often helps.
Cards feel too easy or too hard. How can I tune difficulty?
On the Kana page you can limit to basic characters only, switch scripts, or reshuffle decks. On Kotoba, you can use SM-2 grading and the New cap/Due only controls to adjust the amount of daily review.
How do I learn more about the SM-2 algorithm?
Visit the SM-2 Guide from the Kotoba page or directly via the SM-2 help link. It explains grading, intervals, and how the queue is scheduled.
How can I report a bug or share feedback?
The quickest way is to reach out via the linked GitHub profile or Instagram in the header/footer. Screenshots and a short description of what happened are very helpful.
