Kotoba Quiz — SM‑2 Guide

SuperMemo-2 Algorithm

What is SM‑2?
SM‑2 is a spaced‑repetition algorithm. After each question you grade your recall (Again/Hard/Good/Easy) and the app schedules the next review.
The SM-2 algorithm optimizes your learning by scheduling reviews just as you are about to forget them. It adapts to your performance, showing difficult words more often and easy words less often.
Tips for Effective Practice
  • Use Due only to clear your queue first.
  • Introduce a few new items daily with a modest New cap.
  • Suspend or Boost leeches to avoid frustration.
  • Grade honestly; save Easy for effortless recalls.

1How to Grade Yourself

1
Again → quality 1: reset progress and show soon.
Complete blackout. The card will return to the "Learning" queue immediately.
2
Hard → quality 3: small progress; short interval.
Correct, but required intense mental effort. Interval grows slowly.
3
Good → quality 4: normal progress; moderate interval.
Correct with a little hesitation. The standard passing grade.
4
Easy → quality 5: strong progress; longer interval.
Instant recall. Perfect memory. The interval increases significantly.
Controls
Understanding the parameters
Due only

Due only serves items that are due now. If nothing is due, it falls back to the earliest upcoming seen item.

New cap

New cap limits how many unseen items you introduce per day so you don’t overload future reviews.

Leech

Leech items are those you often forget. Suspend hides them; Boost keeps them in rotation with priority and a small hint.

Stats Overview
Queue
Due now: items needing review right now.
Activity
Reviews today: items you graded today.
Progress
Longest interval: farthest scheduled item (days).
Factor
EF distribution: how "easy" items are (higher EF → longer growth).
